Sanitation Reminders On Hazardous Items

Sanitation Hazardous Waste Items Do Not Throw in your Sanitation Bin

The City of Great Falls would like to remind all customers to properly dispose of hazardous materials.  Improperly disposing of hazardous materials can have serious consequences, such as injuring City employees or residents, starting fires, creating explosions, damaging property, contaminating soil and water, and violating environmental laws.  Please help keep our community clean and safe by following these reminders:

The following items should not be placed in your City sanitation bin:

  • Batteries - including car batteries, lithium batteries, and rechargeable batteries
  • Paints and solvents - oil-based paints, varnishes and paint thinners
  • Electronicis - TVs, phones, computers, and printers
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Cleaning chemicals - bleach, drain cleaners, ammonia
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids
  • Propane tanks and gas cylinders
  • Unused medications and pharmaceuticals
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Live ammunition

If you need to dispose of the items mentioned above, please bring them to the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, which is planned for September.  If you need to dispose of latex paint, you may mix the paint with kitty litter or sand until it becomes solid, bag the paint can, and put them in your sanitation bin or dispose of them at the landfill.  Information on how to locally recycle some of these materials can be found on the City website's recycling page.

Thank you for helping to keep our community clean and safe.  For questions, please visit the City website's Sanitation page or contact Public Works Sanitation Division at 406-455-8158.
