Fair Housing
Discrimination in housing and housing-related transactions is prohibited under Federal and State Law. The Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities. The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of: race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. The Montana Human Rights Act extends protections to also prohibit housing discrimination because of: creed, marital status, and age.
In accordance with the Fair Housing Act, CDBG and HOME grantees are required to administer all programs and activities related to housing and community development in a manner to affirmatively further the policies of the Fair Housing Act.
The most recent Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI) was completed in 2015 as part of the City’s planning process for its HUD-funded CDBG and HOME programs. The AI reviews multiple data sources to identify barriers that affect housing choice within the community and outlines planned actions to address those barriers.
