Shelter In Place Coronavirus
This message is for Mayor Kelly, the Emergency Management & Planning Department and The City Manager. Mr. Kelly et. al., I wrote a similar letter to Governor Bullock, but as a resident of Great Falls, I am writing this to you as our elected City Leaders as well. It is my understanding that the Montana Nurse's Association has recommended to the Governor to enact a Shelter in Place order for Montana to prevent this from getting out of control and to give our health care system a fighting chance as this virus will inevitably spread. Montana is in a relatively good spot right now to get ahead of things, and I hope that the Govenor will act now instead of waiting until it's too late to save lives. After receiving the news this weekend that the virus has already made it to Great Falls, I am calling for Great Falls City Leaders to take action now as well. I have older parents, my fiancé has a compromised immune system and I have young children. I don't want to lose them, or anyone in Great Falls or Montana, or lose my own life because my Federal, State and Local Elected Leaders were hesitant to take action to protect the citizens of this Country, State and City. Please listen to the Nurse's Association and take action now. I know it's a tough choice, and there is pressure to keep everyone working to keep the economy going as long as possible, but none of that will matter if dozens or hundreds of Great Falls Citizens and hundreds or thousands of Montanans die because you waited. With the way this virus is spreading, all States will eventually have no choice but to enact a Shelter in Place order, but why wait until it gets so bad that you have no choice? All political leaders will be judged in history for the decisions that are being made right now. Which side of history do you want to be on? Do you want to be seen as a proactive leader that saved lives or a reactive leader that waited too long allowing people to die that didn't have to? Please do the right thing and join the Montana Nurse's Association to put pressure on the Governor to order a Statewide Shelter in Place now, instead of after it's too late. Additionally, please don't wait for Bullock to take Statewide action, or for the Federal government to take Nationwide action, I am calling on you to put the health and safety of the citizens of Great Falls first. The virus is here in our hometown now, and it will spread. Take action now and enact a Citywide Shelter in Place, with the hopes that the Governor or at the very least other city and county officials across the State will follow your lead. We will survive, it will be tough, it will be hard not having work for a while, but I am willing to make that sacrifice for the greater good and I have to believe that many Montanans are willing to make that same sacrifice too. We will rebuild, the economy will recover, but only if you act now.
