CAN YOU PLEASE REFER THIS TO THE APPROPRIATE PERSON IN THE PLUMBING INSPECTION OR BUILDING INSPECTION DPTS

Two question on appropriate backflow protection:
1) If you were trying to isolate a potential cross connection, like a buried stop and waste valve yard hydrant, from the main potable water residential service line, would a dual check valve be acceptable, or would you need one of the more sophisticated methods.

2) If the potential cross connection, like the buried stop and waste valve yard hydrant, was directly on the potable water residential service line, so it could not be isolated, would the dual check valve be sufficient protection for public water (ie at point of service) or would a better method of backflow protection be needed.

3) Do you recognize the dual check valve as bonafide approved Backflow Prevention
Thanks,
Thomas Donovan

Mr. Donovon,

Two question on appropriate backflow protection:

If you were trying to isolate a potential cross connection, like a buried stop and waste valve yard hydrant, from the main potable water residential service line, would a dual check valve be acceptable, or would you need one of the more sophisticated methods.

The line that feeds the hydrant would need the backflow installed not just the service line so if there is a tee in the service line that is where the backflow would have to be installed above ground, or see option #2. We accept only RPZ backflow ( Reduced Pressure Zone Valve Backflow) or a PVB ( Pressure Vacuum Breaker Backflow ) ; These devices have air gaps the double check has no air gap, each has a different type of installation. Must read instructions from manufacturer.

2) If the potential cross connection, like the buried stop and waste valve yard hydrant, was directly on the potable water residential service line, so it could not be isolated, would the dual check valve be sufficient protection for public water (ie at point of service) or would a better method of backflow protection be needed. The manufacturers of these Yard Hydrants do make a listed Yard Hydrant that has a built in system to protect from backflow, that is acceptable. The listing is from the 2012 Uniform Plumbing Code the product should have a UPC cert on product, box or instructions.

Does Great Falls recognize the dual check valve as an approved Backflow Prevention method? No.

If you have further questions please call me, depending on the installation there may be other options.
