Thank you for reaching out with questions about the chlorine levels in the City of Great Falls drinking water. The best resource for you to find all information about the City’s drinking water is in the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). The most current CCR and several CCRs from the past can also be found on the City website. The CCR is a summary of the drinking water treatment process as well as all constituents found in the water throughout the treatment process, including chlorine.
The EPA requires that all public water systems maintain a chlorine level of 0.2 mg/L throughout their distribution system at all times. To ensure that the City of Great Falls continues to meet those requirements Water Quality Specialists collect 70 samples across the City each month and analyze them for various parameters, including total chlorine. So far this year, the lowest observed level of chlorine in the distribution system was 0.32 mg/L and the highest was 1.94 mg/L. The EPA has established a maximum contaminant level for total chlorine at 4.00 mg/L.
