Louise,

Thank you for your inquiry.

I would like to explain the difference between Service Animal, Therapy Animal and Companion/Emotional Support Animal.

Service Animal- animal that is specifically trained to perform a task for a handler's disability.

Therapy Animal- animal that is trained to bring comfort to those in hospitals, schools or other group care environments.

Companion/Emotional Support Animal- Provides support and emotional comfort to the owner.

The companion/emotional support animal is often recommended by medical providers and the patient is provided something in writing from their medical provider.

Therapy animals and companion/emotional support animals are not viewed as being any different than regular pets as far as being allowed into public places or city registration.  However, some landlords will accept the letter from the medical provider for companion/emotional support animals which could allow a tenant to have a pet in the rental unit.

For any further questions please feel free to contact the shelter at 406-454-2276

Thank you,

GFAS
