Hello Patricia, I'm afraid some of the details provided were inaccurate. The incident happened on May 23rd, 1972, north of Helena - in Lewis & Clark County, not Great Falls.
A write up appeared in the Helena, MT "Independent Record" newspaper on Wednesday, May 24, 1972, Page 10.
Here is a link to the scanned page of the paper: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/35783108/
This is a translation of the article (some words were corrected due to inaccuracies created by OCR):
"First Degree Assault Charged in Shooting .22 caliber bullet, according to Dowling, Mrs. McKnire is currently in the process of a divorce action in District Court. McKnire allegedly drove to the construction site where her husband was working Tuesday, shot him in the side from her car and drove off. A fellow worker took McKnire to the hospital. McKnire was working al Sieben Flats north of Helena at the time he was shot. Lewis and Clark County Search and Rescue Association spokesman said association members assisted in the search for the weapon used against McKnire. Mrs. McKnire allegedly threw the gun out her car window after the shooting on her way back to Helena. Sheriff's deputies are still looking for the gun, believed to be a .22 caliber pistol. Judge Peter G. Meloy set bond for Mrs. McKnire at $52,500. He appointed attorney Andrew Ulick to represent the woman."
Further inquiries should be directed to either the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office or the Lewis & Clark County Attorney's Office. However, I caution you ahead of time - since the incident was an assault and not a homicide (thankfully), details may be very hard, if not impossible, to come by.
