School Threat Response
GREAT FALLS, MT – This morning, at approximately 9:40am, School Resource Officer supervisor, Sergeant Katie Cunningham, received report of a possible suicidal person inside Great Falls High School (GFHS). The suicidal person was reportedly armed with a firearm.
The school was immediately placed in lockdown and law enforcement officers from Great Falls Police Department, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Probation and Parole, and US Marshal Service responded.
While staff and students were secured in their classrooms at GFHS, all other Great Falls Public Schools were sheltered in place, as a precautionary measure.
A thorough search of GFHS ensued and, within 20 minutes of the original report, Sergeant Cunningham declared the school was clear of threats.
Lieutenant Matt Fleming has confirmed other schools across Montana, and the country, received similar threats, believed to be “swatting” incidents.
A “swatting” incident involves the practice of making a fictitious call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed law enforcement officers to a particular address.
GFPD and Great Falls Public Schools will always take threats to our schools seriously, and will respond accordingly. We are grateful for the patience and cooperation of parents, students, and school staff as we work together to ensure safety for everyone effected.
