Re Julian Basil Fahey, January 5, 1961

To Police Archives:

When my father killed himself on the above date, I was sixteen, too young to ask official questions.

One question finally came to mind today: He went to the Missouri riverside to shoot himself with a .22 (I was told), but how long was it before someone found him?

I have to believe you maintain some kind of archive. Police reports may have been minimal on suicides in 1961, but I would greatly appreciate seeing whatever you have.

Other survivors at the time include my brother Richard, my twin sister Karen, and his ex-wife Evelyn Berg Fahey Johnson.

My residence at the time was 1112-1/2 First Avenue North.

Thanks for your attention.

Question: Can someone define a "Part 3" incident? When I search online for police glossary, jargon, or code, I get no answer.Keith Sent from my iPhone

Response: This refers to Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) which is managed through the FBI for law enforcement agencies to report crime annual stats for tracking and trends. They are interested in criminal offenses, so you see the FBI UCR refer to "Part I" and "Part II" offenses primarily. "Part III" includes traffic and other non-criminal incidents, which would include suicide.

Dear Mr. Fahey, I checked with our Records Bureau and received the following info: our micro-film doesn’t go back that far, but even if it did, a suicide report would not have been preserved, because it is considered a "Part 3" incident.  The old card system did not contain any record of the incident, either. The Cascade County Coroner’s Office (part of the Cascade County Sheriffs Office; 406-454-6820) might be a possible next stop.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but, due to it being 55 years distant, I can't say I'm especially hopeful. Sorry we could not be of more assistance.
