City parking
To whom it may concern;
I am writing to state my concerns with residential parking.
I live on the lower south side on a corner lot. I own one vehicle while my next door neighbor has 2 cars, 2 trucks and a utility trailer parked on the street.
I feel as a tax payer I should be able to park in front of my house. After all, I'm expected to maintain the sidewalk and keep the weeds and lawn mowed according to city ordinance. If this is my responsibility I should be able to have a parking spot in front of my house.
My neighbors cannot parallel park so therefore they leave large spaces in between their vehicles taking up three to four parking spots for just two cars. They park just far enough away that you can't fit a vehicle in between the cars to parallel park. This has left me parking mid-block on numerous occasions. This in my opinion is not okay. I do not park on the side of my house on 5th Street because my vehicle has been hit there on two occasions, my fence, the tree and the light pole next to my home have also been hit. I don't use the parking pad next to the alley as I don't feel that is an option especially at night.
My neighbor will also park his truck and trailer on the side of my house obstructing the view to see oncoming traffic. When they park on the side of my house they use my yard as a shortcut which is not okay. I have reported their truck and trailer for sitting long periods of time without moving. They just peal the sticker off and move the trailer. Recently it has been sitting in the same spot for over 3 weeks. About a month-and-a-half to two months ago their truck was parked next to my house and they ran their extension cord through my yard to plug in their truck without my permission. I had unplugged the extension cord taking it back to their yard and I knocked on the door and spoke with a young man letting him know that it was not okay to go through my yard without permission. The young man told me he had to be on my property because his truck wouldn't start. I returned to my home and the young man came over and knocked on my door telling me if I wasn't going to let him run the extension cord through my yard then he was using my outdoor electrical outlet. I expressed to him that that would not be happening. I let him know that I suspected they were already doing that as footprints had come from their yard to my yard leading up to my porch. It hadn't dawned on me until then that they were using my electricity at night. The young man then told me if I wouldn't let him use my electricity then he was going to turn on his generator to start his truck and it makes lots of noise that I would have to listen to. I told him to feel free to go ahead and use his generator.
Later I confronted the mother who stated she had nothing to do with it that it was her husband and stepson who are using my electricity. I tried to speak with his father but he refuses to talk to me or even acknowledge that I'm trying to speak to him.
Last summer while his father-in-law stayed with him, his father-in-law pulled his truck up between the two houses when I left to go to the store. I imagine they thought I was going to be gone longer but I was only gone for about 5-10 minutes. The father-in-law then proceeded to wash his truck. I believe their intentions were to use my water as the water spicket for their house was on the other side of their house, it didn't make sense for them to park in between our houses where there isn't much room and no water spicket. However, that was the side which my spicket was located. I asked him to leave my property and he informed me that his truck wasn't on my property only he was and he was going to wash his truck.
Another concern many of the neighbors have is he has two campers parked out back behind his house next to the alley. One of which an elderly woman lives. Neighbors asked me to mention this as a concern due to the high traffic in the neighborhood and safety concerns they have for her. She appears to be content in the camper but I also worry for her safety.
I was hoping to be able to submit pictures for you but don't see where I'm able to submit an attachment. Their yard is full of debris and the area near the alley has much clutter as well. Many neighbors can attest to the parking issues I've been dealing with. Recently he parked nearly on my bumper apparently trying to make a point. I spoke with Tracy about this on 2/8/17 and she's the one who informed me about this website.
I see a great deal of trailers, RVS and boats in the summer months on the city streets. It limits your view of traffic at times and limits parking. I don't mean to sound like a Debbie Downer but these parking issues had been frustrating for me for quite some time. I believe that having trailers and RVs parked on the city streets also attracts criminal activity. It seems a lot of car thefts and break-ins of vehicles have been reported and I think that it will increase activity.
Thank you for your time in hearing my concerns. Feel free to contact me for questions.
